Reflections from the JDI Quarterly Meeting: A Heartfelt Moment with Judge Tilisha T. Martin

This past quarter, I had the privilege of attending the JDI quarterly meeting, where Honorable Judge Tilisha T. Martin graced us as a guest speaker. Judge Martin’s background is truly inspiring—her journey from social work to law, coupled with her dedication to the well-being of our communities, deeply moved me. As a former social worker, she has always been an advocate at heart, bringing her empathy and insights into the courtroom and making a difference in the lives she touches.

Listening to her speak, I felt such a sense of relief. It was inspiring to hear that people in high positions genuinely care about the future of our children and are willing to take an unconventional approach with teenagers. Judge Martin shared how, when young people come back to her court, rather than simply “judging” them, she asks, “What did not work for you?” This approach offers youth a chance to reflect, empowering them to find solutions and feel supported rather than condemned.

Judge Martin’s message also reaffirmed the importance of the work we do in our studio. She highlighted that community support is key to low recidivism, a belief that resonates deeply with our mission. This reminder emphasizes how essential it is to foster a healthy, supportive community where individuals feel empowered and valued.

I want to take a moment to thank all our community members for being part of this community. Your support and commitment make our work possible, helping us build a space where people can connect, grow, and find strength within themselves. Together, we’re shaping a kinder community and culture for everyone.
