Overview

Parenting is already complex. Parenting across cultures—whether through immigration, mixed cultural households, or navigating racial and cultural identity in the U.S.—adds additional layers. Many parents experience cultural gaps between themselves and their children, between generations, or between home values and the surrounding society. These gaps can exist whether a family immigrated recently or generations ago.

This support group is designed for parents who feel these cultural tensions and are seeking a thoughtful, supportive space to reflect, connect, and grow together.

Hosted in collaboration with the Taiwanese American Foundation, the group draws from what we carry in our hearts—immigrant and cross-cultural experiences—and transforms them into care for our families and the community we live in. The Foundation opens its doors to those navigating similar complexities, recognizing that these experiences deserve understanding, not isolation.

Why Art-Making?

Art-making offers a powerful and accessible way for parents to explore complex emotions that are often difficult to put into words—especially when those emotions are shaped by culture, language, and identity.

In this group, art is not about skill or performance. It is used as:

  • A nonverbal language for expressing feelings that may feel confusing, layered, or culturally restrained

  • A way to slow down and reflect, rather than immediately problem-solve or self-judge

  • A tool for self-understanding, which directly supports more grounded and responsive parenting

  • A shared experience that helps build connection and trust among parents from different backgrounds

Research and clinical practice show that when parents gain insight into their own emotional patterns, stress responses, and cultural narratives, they are better able to support their children’s emotional development.

No art experience is needed. The process is gentle, structured, and guided.
